Kentucky-based Humana on Wednesday announced its launch of a new value-based payment program with hospitals, the Hospital Incentive Program.

The program, according to a Fierce Healthcare report, aims to bring down duplicative services and hospital readmissions, both of which can prove expensive.

Humana’s move comes after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued the call for private insurers to expand their efforts toward more value-based models.

“This program expands Humana’s reach in value-based care as we broaden our efforts to provide a better experience for our members and help them achieve their best health,” Humana Provider Development Center of Excellence Vice President Caraline Coats said in a statement.
