Amazon has taken a big leap forward in the prescription drug arena after announcing plans to buy PillPack, an online pharmacy which offers home delivery of pre-sorted treatment doses, according to a STAT report.

The New Hampshire-based startup touts itself as a more convenient and quicker approach to pharmacy distribution. According to STAT, the company manages multiple prescriptions, offering consumers a pharmacy sorting, packaging and delivery service.

The acquisition of PillPack has the potential send ripples through the prescription drug supply chain.

“PillPack’s visionary team has a combination of deep pharmacy experience and a focus on technology,” Amazon’s Jeff Wilke said in a statement. “PillPack is meaningfully improving its customers’ lives, and we want to help them continue making it easy for people to save time, simplify their lives, and feel healthier. We’re excited to see what we can do together on behalf of customers over time.”

RBC Capital Markets Analyst George Hill estimates the company dispenses between 1.25 to 1.5 million prescriptions annually.
